Rugby Fan Supports Hull NHS with Charity Shirts

Over the last few months, there has been an incredible amount of support from members of our community to help our hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic.   Hull FC super fan, Lee Middleton decided to create a special charity rugby shirt to show his gratitude to everyone working incredibly hard throughout the pandemic.

23rd June 2020

The idea was inspired by his wife Alison, a nurse in the Hospital at Night team at Hull Royal Infirmary.

Lee said, “Alison works incredibly hard every single shift, like all within our NHS, putting themselves on that front-line in order to save lives. She’s my hero, dedicated, devoted and incredibly passionate about her work. Ali works as part of an incredible team along with so many dedicated and caring staff.  I felt I had to do something if I could.”

The charity rugby shirts proved a great success selling 965 shirts within a month, raising a fantastic £9,650 which was split between the WISHH Charity which supports Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospitals, to make a difference to hospital staff working tirelessly to keep us all safe during the outbreak, and the Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust and their charity Health Stars. The Mighty Black and Whites also provided healthcare packages for the Hospital at Night Team at Hull Hospitals and also a Hamper for staff at Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust. Lee said,” Having worked on the shirts for a few months has been hard but extremely rewarding. We are finally seeing people receive them and it has been fantastic.  I have met some incredible people whilst working on this project and it's been a real honour for me and my fellow Hull FC Faithful to help our NHS Heroes right here in Hull.

“Fans from around the world have bought our shirt and the response has been nothing short of sensational breaking all the records for our producers Xile Sports in Dublin.  Working internationally with so many incredible people has allowed us to play our part and we hope that the money raised can really do some good.

“I would like to personally thank each and every person involved from buying, sharing, designing, producing, dispatching and everyone in between. Without everyone supporting these shirts none of this would have happened.  I am very proud of the Old Faithful and wider Rugby League Community along with those who have simply bought one to show their support for our NHS.”

Lisa Whitton, WISHH Charity Manager said, “We would like to thank Lee and The Mighty Black and Whites for their incredible support of our hospitals, it has been a complete pleasure working alongside him from the initial concept, as he worked up the stunning design, to the production of the shirts reflecting the best of our city and key workers who have kept Hull going throughout the pandemic.  It is wonderful to see members of our community proudly wearing their charity shirts. Thank you Lee. ”

Lee is planning on making a further announcement regarding the shirts in July.  You can find updates on their Twitter or Facebook
